The DXCC Challenge was introduced in 2000, to recognise achievements in working DX on many different frequency bands. The De Soto Cup is awarded annually to the highest station on the list. The Cup can only be won once in a lifetime, and will be awarded to the highest eligible runner-up if necessary.
The first list, published in 2000, did not include all bands; only 1,8, 3,5, 7, 14, 28 and 50 MHz totals were used. The first winner of the De Soto Cup was Bob Eshleman W4DR, with a total of 1721 credits. There were 243 stations on the list, ZS6EZ being ranked 70th with a score of 1253. Scores up to 2000-09-30 were included.
The 2001 list was the second, and contained the two Cup winners and all southern Africans, with credits to 2001-09-30. The ARRL's original table includes all stations with totals over 1000, to the tune of 824 stations. Scores reflect countries credited for DXCC on nine bands (1,8 to 50 MHz, except 10 MHz).
The 2002 list did not change much. Two station did not submit any cards, and slipped substantially down the rankings. The others did make submissions, but in all cases also slipped as the list grew to over 1000 stations. Making the top 100 is no longer an easy endeavour.
The 2003 list will include 10 MHz scores too. Leading scores are expected to climb over 3000, with the leading South Africans around the 2200 mark.
